Students will learn how to:

  • Serve alcohol responsibly and legally
  • Recognise signs of intoxication
  • Refuse service to intoxicated or underage persons
  • Understand liquor licensing laws and penalties
  • Handle difficult situations professionally
  • Promote a safe and enjoyable environment for patrons

This unit applies to all workplaces where alcohol is sold or supplied, including hospitality venues, packaged liquor outlets, and events.

The course requires the learners to demonstrate both knowledge and practical skills in a simulated classroom environment.

  • Upon successful completion of all units of competency for this qualification, the student will be awarded the Nationally Recognised Statement of Attainment in SITHFAB002 Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol.
  • Liquor & Gaming NSW interim RSA Certificate
  • Plastic wallet size RSA card (will be mailed by Liquor & Gaming NSW)

The SITHFAB021 Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course is delivered through face-to-face training with practical activities, discussions, and real-world hospitality scenarios to ensure students gain the skills and confidence required to work in licensed venues.

Training is conducted by experienced hospitality trainers who provide industry-relevant knowledge aligned with current RSA legislation and workplace expectations.

Accreditation

Signature Training College is registered with and accredited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and is authorised to deliver Nationally Recognised Training within the Australian Qualifications Framework.
Students are required to:
  • Have sound language and literacy skills
  • Have basic computer skills
  • Obtain a Unique Student Identifier (USI)
  • Provide a valid ID with his/her picture and signature
  • Undertake a Language, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital skills assessment
 
This RSA program is designed to equip participants with essential knowledge and practical skills for responsible alcohol service, including:
  • Strategies for handling refusal of service, preventing underage drinking, and managing alcohol in packaged sales and event settings.
  • Core liquor licensing laws and key facts relating to alcohol consumption.
  • Practical approaches to supporting safe and responsible service practices.
  • Identifying signs of intoxication and applying harm minimisation techniques.
  • Understanding the value and impact of responsible service of alcohol in the industry.
Training is delivered through a blend of engaging presentations, interactive group activities, video resources, and concludes with a final assessment at the end of the session.
There are no mandatory work placement requirement for completing this qualification. The learners are required to complete the knowledge based and practical skill component of the course in order to receive the Statement of Attainment.
Course Fee: $200 – Now only $125
Includes: NSW RSA Competency Card Fee
Duration: 6 Hours (Excludes breaks and administration).

Eligibility

To apply for a NSW RSA Competency Card, participants must:
  • Successfully complete an approved NSW RSA training course with an authorised training provider.
  • Receive a NSW RSA Interim Certificate after course completion.
  • Be applying for their first NSW RSA Competency Card.
Participants who already hold a current NSW RSA Competency Card generally do not need to complete the full course again. If the card is close to expiry or recently expired, refresher training may be required instead.

What You Need

When applying for your competency card at Service NSW, you will need:
  • Your NSW RSA Interim Certificate issued within the last 5 years.
  • Original identification documents totalling 100 points of ID (acceptable documents are listed on the back of the interim certificate).
  • Matching personal details on your ID and training documents. Minor spelling differences can usually be corrected at Service NSW.

Course Outcome

Upon successful completion of the SITHFAB021 – Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol course, participants will receive:
  • A NSW RSA Interim Certificate issued on the same day.
  • A nationally recognised Statement of Attainment for SITHFAB021 – Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol.

How to Obtain Your NSW RSA Competency Card

  1. Successfully complete the RSA course and receive your NSW RSA Interim Certificate.
  2. Prepare your 100 points of identification documents.
  3. Visit your nearest Service NSW centre to:
    • Submit your application
    • Complete the identity verification process
    • Have your photo taken
  4. Your NSW RSA Competency Card will be mailed to your nominated address, usually within 4–5 weeks.

Digital RSA Card

Once your application has been processed, you can also access a digital version of your RSA Competency Card through the Service NSW app.

Education pathways after completing SITHFAB002 Provide Responsible Service of Alcohol may include:
  • SIT30622 Certificate III in Hospitality
  • SIT40621 Certificate IV in Catering Operations
Candidates must bring one form of original photo ID on the day of the course (passport, Australian Drivers License or RTA Proof of Age Card).
If you are a new enrolling student, undertaking Nationally recognized training, you will need a USI number to receive your Qualification/Statement of Attainment. If you do not have a USI you will not be able to receive a qualification. To create a USI account, go to the website: www.usi.gov.au
