On 18 March 2026, Signature Training College proudly conducted its first Interview Skills Workshop at our Camlia Campus. The session was designed to help students gain practical interview experience, build confidence, and better understand employer expectations in real-world recruitment scenarios.
We are delighted to see how actively participants engaged in the workshop and how their confidence improved throughout the session. Many students expressed that the role‑play activities helped them feel more prepared for future interviews. At the same time, our trainers observed several common interview mistakes during the role‑play exercises—mistakes that many job seekers make, often without realising it.
By sharing these observations, we aim to help future job seekers avoid these pitfalls and present themselves more professionally and confidently in interviews.
Key Interview Mistakes Observed During the Workshop
1. Unintentional Body Language
Body language plays a powerful role in interviews and can strongly influence how interviewers perceive a candidate. During the role‑play sessions, some participants displayed unintentional body language, such as fidgeting, crossing arms, slouching, or excessive hand movements.
These actions may signal nervousness, lack of confidence, or disinterest—even when the candidate is well‑prepared.
How to improve:
· Sit upright with relaxed shoulders
· Keep hands calmly placed on your lap or the table
· Avoid fidgeting with pens, phones, or clothing
· Practice mindful posture to appear confident and attentive
At Signature Training College, we emphasise that confident body language can significantly enhance a candidate’s overall impression.
2. Inappropriate Eye Contact
Eye contact is another crucial non‑verbal communication skill. During the workshop, some participants avoided eye contact, while others maintained eye contact in an uncomfortable or inconsistent way.
Lack of eye contact may appear as a lack of confidence or honesty, while excessive staring can feel intimidating or unnatural.
How to improve:
· Maintain natural, steady eye contact while listening and speaking
· Look away briefly when thinking, then return eye contact
· Focus on the interviewer’s face rather than the floor or ceiling
Our trainers coached students on finding the right balance, helping them communicate confidence, respect, and engagement.
3. Unprofessional Tone of Speaking
Another common issue observed was tone of voice. Some participants spoke as if they were chatting with friends—using casual language, slang, or an overly relaxed tone. While friendliness is important, interviews require a professional communication style.
How to improve:
· Use clear, professional language
· Avoid slang or overly casual expressions
· Speak at a steady pace with a confident tone
· Practice answering common interview questions aloud
The workshop helped students understand how to adjust their communication style to suit a professional interview environment.
4. Sitting Posture and Overall Presentation
Posture and sitting style also made a strong impression during the role‑play sessions. Sitting too casually, leaning back excessively, or appearing disengaged can unintentionally signal a lack of seriousness.
How to improve:
· Sit upright and slightly forward to show interest
· Keep feet flat on the floor
· Avoid leaning back or crossing arms
· Be mindful of overall presentation and professionalism
These small adjustments can make a big difference in how employers perceive a candidate.
Why Interview Practice Matters
Interviews are not just about what you say—they are about how you present yourself. Many of the mistakes observed during the workshop are common among job seekers, especially those attending interviews for the first time. The good news is that these skills can be improved through practice, feedback, and professional guidance.
At Signature Training College, our workshops focus on practical learning. By participating in role‑play interviews, students gain valuable insights into their strengths and areas for improvement in a safe and supportive environment.
Building Confidence for Future Success
The Interview Skills Workshop at our Camlia Campus successfully equipped participants with greater awareness, confidence, and readiness for real interviews. By understanding common mistakes and learning how to correct them, students are better prepared to make a positive first impression with potential employers.
Signature Training College remains committed to supporting students beyond the classroom—helping them develop essential employability skills that lead to long‑term career success.
We look forward to delivering more workshops that empower our students to stand out and succeed in today’s competitive job market.
